Big Fan here Flipper. I "discovered" Stevie only after he died, sadly. The Kult had big blinders on me at the time he was rising.
He inspired me to pick up a Strat again after 30 yrs or so of not playing. I have favorite songs for different reasons.
My favorite for his incredible tone has to be "Leave My Girl Alone" from his second ACL performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rVKiPNzPoY The tone he gets from that Strat is the holy grail for me, it's a never ending journey.
And we can't pass on "Looking Out The Window at You" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR9hk_Nflfo
The above are after he was clean and sober.
For pure musicianship it is "Texas Flood" from "Live at The El Mocambo" all 10 minutes of it . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWLw7nozO_U Those full step 3 string bends are incredible, he ain't makin' that face because it's cool, he's makin' that face because it friggin' HURTS. I' have been practicing this song for a year and have nailed the first 8 bars or so only once.
And for pure, stunning, technical mastery of the instrument, "Voodoo Chile" from "Live at The El MoCambo", http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GSpbuFSr2o
It absolutely amazes me that he was so good at The El Mocambo considering he was coked out of his mind.
My Favorite album is Texas Flood, followed by Blues at Sunrise.
